When I was 8 years old I asked my mom what she did with my dad when they got married on their honeymoon… and she said “You’ll find out…” well… I was the curious one in my family!
Anyways… I was full of adventure and curiosity as I was arriving in America back in the early 2000s. I quickly learned how to fend for myself and how to get a job, and how to pay bills and how to buy food (I am still not used to, to be honest!). It was a speed course and a huge culture shock I had to overcome very quickly.
So we used to walk a lot when we were students because we couldn't afford to buy a car, so walking by the trailer park we rented at I saw all these people sitting in front of their trailers in lawn chairs saying things like “All these foreigners coming stealing our jobs'' and I was very confused about them. I wasn’t stealing, I was just working! Cleaning those hotel rooms after springbreakers, digging up used condoms from the couches, throwing away pizza boxes from the condos, yep…Stealing your American Dream I’ve never imagined was my reality!
I didn’t realize I would not only learn the language well enough to communicate in everyday life but to write for the magazines…Yeah, that happened recently… I am still dumb sighted by that.
I didn’t see it as a journey… back then. I was 19 just trying to learn about the world, I was actually trying to learn the language, because I was fascinated with the English language, I even went to college in Russia to learn linguistics. I thought it was some magical thing that I could master…and I came here to learn. Boy, I learned a lot!
I am still learning quite a bit every day, by choice. I take courses online, watch webinars, listen to podcasts…and read books. That’s one of my favorite things to occupy myself with when I’m home. I will be writing some reviews about the books I read. If it’s good I want to share it with the world!
For now, I will continue working on this blog, exploring things and trying to learn as much as I can in the process. À plus tard!
